Start at the computer’s port

Look up the exact computer model and its port specification. Identify which port supports display output, charging and the required data mode. A USB-C connector can serve different functions, so a compatible physical connection does not establish that a monitor will work.

List what you want attached at the same time: display, storage, keyboard, network or charging. Count the connections and note whether a port is for data, power input or display output.

Separate input power from laptop power

A hub’s power-input rating can be higher than the power passed through to the laptop. Check the manufacturer’s laptop output figure, the charger required, and whether a charger is included. The computer may need more power under load than the proposed combination supplies.

Display resolution and refresh rate belong together. “4K” alone leaves out a useful part of the specification. Match the complete advertised output mode to the monitor and your intended work. This guide does not establish performance with a particular laptop.

Leave room for the real bottleneck

Advertised data rates are maximum interface ratings, not guaranteed file-copy results. Storage speed, cables, shared bandwidth and the host can affect the result. Avoid buying ports you do not need, but check whether one missing connection would require another adapter.

Keep the exact model number in your comparison. Anker products with similar names can differ, and an A8355 claim should not be transferred to another version.

Put the checks next to a real example.

Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), A8355

  • HDMI output up to 4K at 30 Hz; USB-C data and two USB-A data ports rated up to 5 Gbps.
  • 100 W PD input; up to 85 W pass-through to the laptop; charger not included.

Consider: The hub’s USB-C ports do not output video. Confirm the host’s display support, charger requirements and exact model. The charger is not included.

Your before-buying checklist

  • Does the exact host port support the required video mode?
  • What resolution and refresh rate can the hub output?
  • How much power reaches the laptop, with which charger?
  • Are the data ports, cable and bandwidth suitable?
